Harmony with Nature
We now find ourselves called toward a new testimony. We must witness to the planetary crisis of our times and to our own role in it. We can no longer turn away from the harm done to fragile biological systems.
We know that our power as human beings to alter nature for good and ill makes us responsible in a way that is different from other creatures. Our way of living needs to change in a profound ways, and we who are affluent must curb our demands.
Addicted to Risk
For as long as I have been attending La Jolla Monthly Meeting there has been a strong fiber of environmentalism within our meeting. As food for thought I suggest this link to a TED talk from Naomi Klein. We as a species need to plot a new course. . .
'first day'
early
my slim moon
sounds silent cymbals,
slowly
my stars fade
breath flutters to my river's surface and
cottonwood leaf;
my chanting makes love with
my day people ---
insects, birds, humankinds, snakes ---
Come, come into the exaltation
which we are
When I was a child, I roamed woods and fields. Now I'm a city homeboy. Most of what I meet and consider are people, and things people make or say.
Yesterday I met a rattlesnake: it raised its head and tested with its tongue; I admired and waved insects from my face; it glided from the warm path; I glided along my worn path.
We are "Nature" (might I call us "Self", or "God"?). So facile is our claim to self-separation out of Unity. So acquiescent are we in Self destruction.
