All are Welcome!

Jack Leshefka, Clerk of La Jolla Meeting

The La Jolla Friends Meeting is unprogrammed, that is to say we have no paid clergy or structured worship. Our Meeting for Worship consists of one hour of waiting in expectant silence. We believe that we have direct and immediate access to God, that no intermediary is required or necessary. Participants endeavor to still their busy minds and become open to the leading of the Spirit. From time to time, someone may be moved to rise and give a message which they have carefully discerned is for the gathered Friends. We have Meeting for Worship every Sunday at 10:00 A.M. and we encourage you to JOIN US.

Martin Luther King Day Parade – Thank you for being here!

by Laura Kohl, Clerk of Peace and Social Order Committee
Jan. 16, 2012

Yesterday, a handful of La Jolla Quakers joined thousands of people of all ages and colors to refresh the image of Dr. Martin Luther King, and to seek out his message.

I have participated in the marches and parades on this day over many years, and have observed the party atmosphere of celebrating Dr. King, but not an acceptance of what he REALLY said and what he REALLY demanded of us. In truth, in the past, many of the groups participating did not live his message of peacefulness and equality.

Yesterday was just fantastic. We had vibrant children’s groups, wonderful middle and high school bands, some of those others I won’t list, an ENORMOUS contingent of San Diego Vets for Peace, and an even more humongous group of the Occupy folks from all over San Diego County.

Now – THAT was a group of people spreading the actions of Martin Luther King. He gathered us all around him. No one was excluded. This eclectic group of Occupy-ers was every color, every personality, and from every background - and vibrant! It was my favorite Martin Luther King Day march/parade in a long time! And, those watching the parade from the sides thanked US for being there. It was our treasure to be there!

Update on the Compassion Campaign of the San Diego Veterans For Peace

from Gil Field, La Jolla Meeting
San Diego Veterans For Peace

Dear Friends:

The Compassion Campaign of the San Diego Veterans For Peace continues into its second year and is providing urgently needed sleeping bags, stuff-sacks and ponchos to both veteran and non-veteran homeless folks in downtown San Diego. There are 9000 homeless people in San Diego County.

Veterans were downtown last Saturday (Dec. 3) and gave out 75 bag sets, assisted by “Outreach For Humanity” and representatives of Home Depot and Pepsi.

Veterans were out last night, will be out tonight and tomorrow night giving out the last of our most recent order of 52 bags sets.

With the opening this past week of the Veterans Tent (150 beds) and the Alpha Project Public Shelter (225 beds), we are focusing our outreach on those who do not make it into these facilities at 8 PM when a lottery takes place for the last few beds. Imagine that you have to be in a lottery at 8 PM to get a bed each night, and that many nights you do not get one and then go back onto the street to sleep.

Since November 1st, with your donations, we have given out 177 sleeping bag sets, donated clothes, food, bottled water, and kind words to those on the street.

It is cold out there .... often high 30s to low 40s at night. Rain is expected this weekend.

This year, thanks to the Coleman Company, $27 buys a sleeping bag, waterproof poncho and nylon stuff sack.

All donors receive a beautiful thank you card (makes a great holiday gift) and a 501-C-3 receipt for tax purposes.

The San Diego Veterans For Peace thanks you again for your past support and asks you to consider a donation during this holiday season.
